Making Room for Jesus
Luke 2:7
7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
Thoughts:
We often see the story of Jesus’ birth as an innkeeper turning away Mary and Joseph, but if we look more closely at the Bible, it tells a deeper story. Luke’s Gospel doesn’t focus on rejection, but rather on the plain fact that the inn was already packed with travelers because of the census. Even with this everyday problem, something amazing happened: the eternal Word, who was so high, came down to be born in a humble manger.
This image has a lot of meaning for our faith. Jesus, who made everything, decided to live with us in plain clothes, showing us how He wants to come into our lives; softly, humbly, and sometimes we don’t even notice Him when we’re too busy with our own worries. Just like there wasn’t much room for Him in Bethlehem, our own busyness can make our hearts not welcome Him.
The Incarnation encourages us to examine our spiritual lives: are we making room for the One who came to live among us? By welcoming Christ, we’re like the divine self-emptying that brought salvation into the world, and we open our hearts to the joy and peace that only He can offer.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, help me clear the clutter in my heart and mind that keeps me from truly embracing Jesus. Teach me to prioritize my time and space for Your presence, welcoming You with a heart full of love and gratitude. Amen.
