Obedience Over Expectations
1 Samuel 15:22
And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
Thought:
God calls us to simple obedience rather than grand gestures. This means that He delights not in elaborate displays of devotion or in achievements designed to impress others, but in hearts that are willing to follow His instructions day by day. Often, we place heavy burdens on ourselves, striving to meet expectations God never set, fueled by comparison, societal pressures, or our own ideals of perfection. Yet, true joy and peace are found when we align with what God actually asks of us, however small or ordinary it may seem to us or others.
The beauty of obedience lies in consistency. It may look like showing kindness to someone in need, forgiving a hurt, or taking a step of faith, even when it feels insignificant. Simple obedience reflects trust, trust that God’s plan is better than our own vision of success. While others may chase after recognition or dramatic moments of spiritual triumph, God treasures the humble heart that walks faithfully with Him in the daily, often unseen choices. In those small steps of surrender, His power is revealed, and our lives become a testimony of His grace.
Prayer:
Gracious God, strip away the burdens of false expectations and replace them with a heart of obedience. Help us to listen to Your voice and be faithful in our response to Your guidance. In Jesus' name, Amen.
