Set Apart by the Truth
John 17:16–18
They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.
Thought:
Jesus prayed that His people would be sanctified through the truth of God’s Word. Sanctification is not simply self improvement, better habits, or moral discipline. It is the holy work of God by which He sets us apart from the world and makes us more like Christ. Since Jesus said, “thy word is truth,” we must understand that the sanctifying process is deeply connected to the time we spend with God in His Word.
This raises a personal question: Do I set aside specific time for the sanctification process? We often schedule what we believe is important. We make time for work, meals, appointments, responsibilities, and rest. Yet the soul also needs time before the Lord. If the Word of God is the truth by which we are sanctified, then we should not treat it as an occasional thought, but as a daily necessity. Time in the Word is not wasted time. It is the place where God corrects and shapes our lives for His purpose.
Jesus also said that His people are sent into the world. God does not sanctify us so we can hide from the world, but so we can represent Christ within it. A sanctified life is a sent life. Before we face the world, we need the truth of God working in us. Today, ask the Lord to help you set aside intentional time for His Word, not merely to gain information, but to be transformed by truth and prepared for the mission He has given you.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for Your Word, which is truth. Thank You for the sanctifying work You are doing in my life through Jesus Christ. Help me to set aside specific time to meet with You, hear Your truth, and allow Your Word to shape my heart. Separate me from the values of this world and make me more like Christ. Prepare me through Your truth so I can live faithfully in the world where You have sent me. In the name of Jesus, amen.
