Watching in Prayer

1 Peter 4:7
But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.

Thought:
Peter connects sober-minded living with watchful prayer. The word watch carries the idea of being alert and awake. As the end approaches, God does not call us to less prayer but to more. Prayer is one of the clearest evidences that we are truly living in view of eternity. When we pray, we confess that we are dependent, not self-sufficient. We acknowledge that we are not ready for what the future holds unless God sustains us.

A life that believes Jesus is coming will be a praying life. A church that believes Jesus is coming will be a praying church. This does not always mean long public prayers. It means a heart that turns to the Lord continually throughout the day. When you feel pressure, do you immediately move to worry or to prayer? When you make plans, do you lean on your own wisdom or seek His? Today, begin by inviting the Lord into the ordinary moments of your schedule. Ask Him to shape your reactions, your words, and your decisions. Let your belief in His return drive you to your knees rather than to anxiety.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, make me watchful in prayer. Forgive me for the times I have treated prayer as optional or missed Your presence in my busyness. Help me to live this day aware of You, turning every concern, every choice, and every fear into prayer. Keep me spiritually awake and ready for Your coming. I pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
